In a time when you can’t escape disheartening or upsetting news, it is more crucial now than ever to talk about action. We know people are angry and fed up with our government’s action or inaction on a number of issues — like DACA, gun laws, and healthcare — but it is important to recognize that anger alone won’t change anything.
We’ve seen countless rallies, calls to legislators, and sit-ins happening all around the country. These actions are necessary and important, but we know that the efforts only go so far. Many of our legislators are unwilling to vote in our best interest because it is not in their own best interest, and that is just plain wrong. The reality is that most will not change their stance on issues no matter how hard we try to convince them, so the only solution is to vote them out.
Early voting in the Texas primary election is happening right now, and with a record number of Democrats running in Texas, there is no shortage of work to be done. If you’ve never participated in Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts, it is one of the most fun, exciting, exhausting, and exhilarating times you’ll ever experience. During GOTV, campaigns and organizations like ours work to mobilize Democratic voters by calling them, knocking on their doors, or sending texts. We want to ensure that voters know about the election and have all the information they need to make it to the ballot box.
For a long time, Texas has been considered a “red” state, but the reality is that we are a non-voting state. This reality is why GOTV is crucial to winning our elections. Every interaction with a voter increases their likelihood of voting, and the goal is to talk to as many people as possible and get them to the polls.
All of my GOTV experiences have been incredible. I’ve been lucky to experience GOTV in several states, and each one brings some of the most passionate and dedicated people I have ever met in my life. I know 2018 will be no different. Democrats are energized and have been working hard across our state. This GOTV, we will be working to turn out the voters we have been registering. We saw how this made a difference in the races Battleground Texas worked on in 2016, and together with our incredible team of volunteers, we are going to continue to work hard to make a difference for Texas Democrats in 2018.
Ted Cruz recently said, “The left is going to show up.” If you’re like me and want to prove him right, you’ll make sure to get out there for GOTV and talk to as many voters as you possibly can.
Use this tool to make calls to encourage Texans to cast their ballots, no matter where in Texas you live:
If you have a VAN login or ActionID, you can use that to log in. Otherwise, use the “Create an ActionID account” link. Once you log in, you’ll get a list of voters to call and a script that you can use to encourage them to get out and vote.
This phone bank list includes tens of thousands of people Battleground Texas has registered to vote over the past five years. We need to finish our work by turning these Texans out in the primary and getting more people involved in the political process.
We have a unique opportunity here in Texas, and like they say in Hamilton, “History has its eyes on you!” Happy GOTV, y’all, see you in the field!
